Holidays in the mountains
Val Pusteria has a old tradition of holidays in the mountains; during the Habsbourg times well-off Viennese families spent their holidays in Dobbiaco or Villabassa. These Dolomites mountain resorts were comfortably connected with Vienna and Munich by train. Val Pusteria famous guests include: Liz Taylor, Gustav Mahler and many Italian noblemen. Many famous South Tyroleans were (or are) from Val Pusteria: an example was Ms Emma Hellenstainer, one of the “pioneers” of tourism in South Tyrol tourism. During the “Belle Epoque” it was enough to write “Frau Emma Europa” on the envelope that it reached Ms Hellenstainer’s hotel in the Alps with no problems! Another important inhabitant of Val Pusteria is Mr. Luis Durnwalder, the South Tyrolean governor; he was born in Falzes. If you spend your winter holidays in the mountains in Val Pusteria, spend them on the Plan de Corones skiing, or experimenting curling or seeing a night torchlight procession!
